The 1936 Cleveland Centennial Half Dollars were struck for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the city to coincide with the Great Lakes Exposition held on the shore of Lake Erie. The reverse design is particularly interesting for its creation of perspective on the surface of a flat coin. The maximum authorized mintage for the issue was 50,000 pieces. Initially half of this quantity was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. After additional demand was anticipated, the remaining 25,000 coins were ordered. These were also struck in the Philadelphia Mint, but with production taking place in 1937. Because of the stipulations of the authorizing legislation, these coins carried the same 1936 date and are indistinguishable from the earlier strikes. Designs for the Cleveland Half Dollars were created by Brenda Putman. The obverse features a left facing portrait of Moses Cleaveland, the founder of the city. Inscriptions read United States of America, Moses Cleaveland, Liberty and Half Dollar. The reverse depicts a map of the Great Lakes area with stars placed at the location of prominent cities. A compass appears above the map with the point at the slightly larger star representing Cleveland. Inscriptions read Great Lakes Exposition, 1836, 1936, Cleveland Centennial, In God We Trust, and E Pluribus Unum. With the entire maximum mintage produced at a single mint facility, the 1936 Cleveland Half Dollar remains readily available for present day collectors and affordable even into gem grades. On that day, Neil Armstrong became the first man ever to set foot on the face of the moon. Buzz Aldrin was not far behind. The lunar landing expanded the possibilities of the human imagination and inspired millions of people aiming for large goals. It also marked a seminal victory for the United States in the Space Race with the Soviet Union, an especially important one after the Soviets were the first to put a man in space. The US Mint is marking the 50th anniversary of the occasion with seven new coins, including this Proof Silver Dollar. Struck from 26.73 g of. 999 fine silver and bearing the “P” mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint, this coin is part of a joint mintage with the uncirculated version of 400,000 pieces. Breathtaking Neil Armstrong Design by Phebe Hemphill. S Mint held a contest for the reverse design, which a submission by Gary Cooper won. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, it consists of a single footprint on the moon’s surface under the names of the NASA programs that made the moon landing possible, “MERCURY, ” “GEMINI, ” and APOLLO. Also integrated into the design are images of the moon in different phases. The bottom half of this face bears several additional inscriptions, including the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse, modelling it off of part of a famous photo. The face is filled with the helmet of Buzz Aldrin’s spacesuit. In the reflection of the helmet’s visor, Neil Armstrong stands on the moon with an American flag to one side and the lunar module on the other. “ONE DOLLAR” is inscribed within the visor, while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one) appear on other parts of the helmet. This coin received the second highest available grade, Proof 69, from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). A coin must be perfect as seen by the naked eye to receive that grade. Offered here is a 1893 Columbian Commemorative Half Dollar. It is graded by PCGS as MS-64. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. The first commemorative coin issued in the United States was the 1892 Columbian Half Dollar. The coin was issued to raise funds for the Worlds Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. The issuance of the first coin marked the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. A total of 5,000,000 coins were authorized for production with production taking place during 1892 and 1893. After minted quantities of the half dollar remained unsold, they were released into circulation at face value. The obverse of the Columbian Half Dollar features a portrait of Christopher Columbus in profile designed by Olin Lewis Warner and engraved by Charles E. The inscriptions surround the portrait read United States of America and Columbian Half Dollar with the phrases divided by stars. The Santa Maria, Columbus flagship, is depicted on the reverse with two globes below. The inscriptions surrounding read Worlds Columbian Exposition Chicago and the date 1892 or 1893 with two stars to either side. The date of Columbuss discovery of the new world 1492 appears split by the two globes. The reverse was designed by Olin Lewis Warner and engraved by George T.
