1861 O 50 cent. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The silver coin comes with beautiful wooden display box.. AND the CD S. The book Lost Gold of the Republic: The Remarkable Quest for the Greatest Shipwreck Treasure of the Civil War by Pritt Vesilind. American side-wheel steamer S. The 210-foot steamship departed New York loaded with food, medicine, clothing and other supplies on October 18. The war had taken its toll and the South lay in ruins, with its economy shattered. The Republic s mission was to help rebuild New Orleans. The breeze turned into what the captain called a perfect hurricane. Towering waves soon began to crash over the steamers deck and anything that wasnt tied down was washed overboard. The wind was howling through the rigging like demons of the sea, wrote William Nichols, a former Yankee soldier. None expected anything but death. As the Republic pitched and rolled, passengers and crew desperately emptied bucket after bucket of seawater from the vessels flooded hold. After a two-day struggle, unable to outrun the storm and left with no other choice, the fifty-nine people onboard escaped in the Republic s lifeboats. One person drowned and the gold laden Republic sank to a watery grave. The New York Times headline Disaster at Sea told the story on October 30, 1865. The Republic would lay undisturbed for the next 138 years. In 2003, after searching for more than twelve years, Greg Stemm and John Morris of Odyssey Marine Explorations Inc. Of Tampa, Florida, announced that they had discovered the wreck of the Republic off the coast of Georgia. On July 14, 2003, Odyssey petitioned the U. District Court in Tampa for exclusive rights of recovery from the site. Scientists aboard Odyssey used remote control underwater robots, each weighing seven tons to retrieve coins and relics from the wreck. In November, the crew brought up dozens of coins, 600 glass bottles and a telescope. Later the media announced that a large, heavy bronze (brass) bell had been recovered by Odyssey Marine Exploration from the site they believe to be the final resting place off the S. Republic , which sank off the Georgia-Florida border in 1865. Visible on the uncleaned artifact are the block letters SSEE. Cleaning should reveal the full name S. TENNESSEE which was launched under that name in 1863. Note: The steamer was built at Baltimore in 1854. She was captured at during the evacuation of New Orleans and commissioned as the U. Tennessee on May 2, 1862.
