1896 $1 Morgan Silver Dollar NGC Near GEM MS 64 Rosé Tones on Obverse and Rev

The Morgan dollar was a United States dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar, ceased due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which also ended the free coining of silver. The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. The obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty, while the reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched. The mint mark, if any, appears on the reverse above the “o” in “Dollar”. The dollar was authorized by the Bland-Allison Act. Following the passage of the 1873 act, mining interests lobbied to restore free silver, which would require the Mint to accept all silver presented to it and return it, struck into coin. This act, once again, was repealed in 1893. When those silver reserves were depleted in 1904, the Mint ceased to strike the Morgan dollar. The Pittman Act, passed in 1918, authorized the melting and recoining of millions of silver dollars. Pursuant to the act, Morgan dollars resumed mintage for one year in 1921. The design was replaced by the Peace dollar later the same year. In the early 1960s, a large quantity of uncirculated Morgan dollars in their original bags were discovered in the Treasury vaults, including issues once thought rare. Individuals began purchasing large quantities of the pieces at face value and then removed them from circulation through hoarding, and eventually the Treasury ceased exchanging silver certificates for silver coin. Beginning in the 1970s, the Treasury conducted a sale of silver dollars minted at the Carson City Mint through the General Services Administration. In 2006, Morgan’s reverse design was used on a silver dollar issued to commemorate the old San Francisco Mint building. Ancient Coins Guaranteed Authentic. 1877-S Silver Trade Dollar NGC MS61 Looks Great with target tones, Must See

I paid too much for this trade dollar, but I had to have it. Bought it on 2/2/20 to re-sell. It has glorious toning of blueish/sea foam green at the rims turning to rose lilac moving to the center. Should have gone a point higher, but as you know toning masks contact marks. No, Not a gem, but one heck of an example of an original looking Trade dollar that simply glows!! The Elgin, Illinois, Centennial half dollar was a fifty-cent commemorative coin issued by the United States Bureau of the Mint in 1936, part of the wave of commemoratives authorized by Congress and struck that year. Intended to commemorate the centennial of the founding of Elgin, the piece was designed by local sculptor Trygve Rovelstad. The obverse depicts an idealized head of a pioneer man. The reverse shows a grouping of pioneers, and is based upon a sculptural group that Rovelstad hoped to build as a memorial to those who settled Illinois, but which was not erected in his lifetime. In 1935, through his congressman, he had legislation introduced into the House of Representatives for a commemorative coin in honor of Elgin’s centennial that year. Rovelstad hoped that the proposed coin would both depict and be a source of funds for his memorial to the pioneers. Texas coin dealer L. Hoffecker heard of the effort and contacted Rovelstad to offer his assistanceHoffecker had been a force behind the Old Spanish Trail half dollar, issued in 1935 and distributed by him. The bill for the Elgin coin did not pass until 1936. Art historian Cornelius Vermeule considered the Elgin coin among the most outstanding American commemoratives.
