FROSTY Morgan Silver Dollar Prooflike MIRRORS 1882-CC $1 NGC Certified MS64 PL
Ancient Coins Guaranteed Authentic. Does not include items damaged within first 30 days. The Morgan dollar was a United States dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar, ceased due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which also ended the free coining of silver. The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. The obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty, while the reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched. The mint mark, if any, appears on the reverse above the “o” in “Dollar”. The dollar was authorized by the BlandAllison Act. Following the passage of the 1873 act, mining interests lobbied to restore free silver, which would require the Mint to accept all silver presented to it and return it, struck into coin. This act, once again, was repealed in 1893. When those silver reserves were depleted in 1904, the Mint ceased to strike the Morgan dollar. The Pittman Act, passed in 1918, authorized the melting and recoining of millions of silver dollars. Pursuant to the act, Morgan dollars resumed mintage for one year in 1921. The design was replaced by the Peace dollar later the same year. In the early 1960s, a large quantity of uncirculated Morgan dollars in their original bags were discovered in the Treasury vaults, including issues once thought rare. Individuals began purchasing large quantities of the pieces at face value and then removed them from circulation through hoarding, and eventually the Treasury ceased exchanging silver certificates for silver coin. Beginning in the 1970s, the Treasury conducted a sale of silver dollars minted at the Carson City Mint through the General Services Administration. In 2006, Morgan’s reverse design was used on a silver dollar issued to commemorate the old San Francisco Mint building. 1883 Hawaii Half Dollar MS63 PL NGC 50¢1/2 Dollar ProofLike MIRRORS 99 CENT
All King Kalakaua coins would not be legal tender after 1/1/1904. 700,000 half dollars were minted. 612,245 were melted down and lost forever. This leaves only 87,781coins in the official count. However, there’s a problem with the official count. It doesn’t take into account of 2 large Honolulu fires. There was a fire in 1887 and a huge fire known as the Great Bubonic Plague Fire of Honolulu in 1900. How do fires and surviving coin numbers correlate? There was a very large Chinese population in Honolulu. No one really knows the number of coins lost to these two intense fires. The 700,000 coins were minted in San Francisco using. Seated Liberty Half Dollar planchets. Still not special enough? Here’s where it gets really good! Whaling ships ships crowded Honolulu harbor. They brought oil, ivory and lots of RATS. Rats eat burlap bags. 1883 silver coins were stored in burlap bank bags. Sulfur was generously used on these burlap bank bags to deter the rats. Sulfur turns silver coins black and dull. Finding an untoned “white” silver coin can be challenging. Most coins are dark. Some have semi colorful toning. Finding a Proof-Like coin is virtually impossible!! There’s only TWO NGC graded PL half dollars! Here’s an example. The King of Morgans, the 1895 Proof has a mintage of 880. At the time of writing this, there are 7 auctions for an 1895. After that, come back an consider this ultra rare coin! This is a coin that will standout in any collection! I occasionally sell coins from my collection. I thoroughly inspect all of my coins prior to purchasing them originally myself. This means that your getting the best example of the grade that you’ll find.
