Serving Collectors and Investors for Over 50 Years. Deal of the Day. This was in response to the ongoing loss of these holdered coins, as collectors have come to recognize the historic value of the coin and holder combination. Over the years, many have been lost forever when the coins they contained were broken out to be submitted for grading. By combining the best of both worlds, NGC hopes to encourage owners of these coins to preserve the GSA holders for posterity. This Carson City Morgan Uncirculated Silver Dollar comes with its complete original GSA Sale packaging – includes plastic holder, outer box and numbered Certificate of Authenticity Photos are of the actual coin you will receive RELEASE OF SILVER DOLLARS BY THE U. TREASURY: “THE GSA SALE” The General Services Administration (GSA) was responsible for sorting and marketing the U. Treasury’s hoard of silver dollars after the Treasury ceased issuing silver dollar coins in 1964. Sealed in rigid plastic holders and boxed with a message from then President Richard M. Nixon, these silver dollars account for most of the mint state CC Morgans known today. Veteran numismatists may remember the great rush on silver dollars that occurred during the early 1960s. For generations these coins had laid undisturbed in Treasury and Federal Reserve vaults, serving primarily as a backing for Silver Certificate notes. In 1935, when Congress changed the written obligation appearing on Silver Certificates so that the notes could be redeemed “in silver” instead of in “silver dollars”, production of silver dollar coins ceased. Only in the far western states were silver dollars used in daily commerce, and even collectors showed little interest in Morgan and Peace Dollars. Starting about 1958, however, the number of silver dollars being withdrawn from government vaults increased annually, reaching a fever pitch in 1963-64 following the discovery of previously scarce dates. In March of 1964 the Treasury, after having discovered many bags of scarce CC silver dollars, stopped redeeming Silver Certificates with silver dollars, offering bars or granules in their place. After June 24, 1968 the redemption of silver certificates in silver ceased altogether, although the notes remain legal tender to this day. 0.7734 troy oz. 1972-D Eisenhower Dollar From US Mint Sealed Bag NGC MS65 Black Core Holder Charlie Duke Signed label SKU56709. In 1969, Neil Armstrong took one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind when he became the first person ever to set foot on the surface of the moon. The accomplishment was not only a major coup for the human species, but also an important victory for the United States in the heart of the Cold War. Congress saw fit to commemorate the occasion, while also honoring the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower, with a new dollar. This coin comes from the second year of issue and bears the “D” mint mark of the Denver Mint. Patriotic Moon Landing Design by Frank Gasparro. Both faces of this coin were designed by Frank Gasparro. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of President Eisenhower. He bears a stern countenance that is fitting for one of the greatest Generals in American history. He is joined by the inscriptions “LIBERTY, ” “1972, ” and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. Gasparro’s reverse is similar to the Apollo 11 mission patch worn into space by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. It features an eagle landing on the moon carrying an olive branch. Thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, arch over the bird, and the earth is visible in the distance. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” are inscribed along the rim, while “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one) is inscribed just above the bird’s head. This coin received a Mint State 65 (MS65) grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that the coin was well struck.
