This piece displays an original vibrant white luster, semi glossy reflective fields and excellent, sharp, frosty details. The total mintage for this date & mint mark: 1,204,000. They were the first standardized silver dollars following the production of the Seated Liberty pattern which ended in 1873 due to the Coinage Act of 1873. The Coinage Act of 1873 outlawed all holders of silver bullion to strike their silver into legal tender. In 1878, the Grand Bland Plan otherwise referred to as the’Bland-Allison Act’, was enacted to restore the silver dollar. The fineness of these silver dollars became standardized at 412.5 grains of. 100 copper, a net weight of. 77344 ounces pure silver, and a total weight of 26.73 grams 0.942873 oz. Morgan Dollars as they became known, were designed and named after by the United States Mint assistant engraver George T. Morgan’s design featured a profiled bust of Liberty on the obverse and an eagle with outstretched wings on the reverse. Furthermore, dates were struck below the bust of liberty and mint marks (when present) are below the wreath on the reverse. Morgan’s last initial (M) can be found at the truncation of the neck. His last initial (M) is also found on the reverse on the left hand loop of the ribbon. Packages are no longer insured if tracking information shows the package is delivered. Serving Collectors and Investors for Over 50 Years. Deal of the Day. This was in response to the ongoing loss of these holdered coins, as collectors have come to recognize the historic value of the coin and holder combination. Over the years, many have been lost forever when the coins they contained were broken out to be submitted for grading. By combining the best of both worlds, NGC hopes to encourage owners of these coins to preserve the GSA holders for posterity. This Carson City Morgan Uncirculated Silver Dollar comes with its complete original GSA Sale packaging – includes plastic holder, outer box and numbered Certificate of Authenticity Photos are of the actual coin you will receive RELEASE OF SILVER DOLLARS BY THE U. TREASURY: “THE GSA SALE” The General Services Administration (GSA) was responsible for sorting and marketing the U. Treasury’s hoard of silver dollars after the Treasury ceased issuing silver dollar coins in 1964. Sealed in rigid plastic holders and boxed with a message from then President Richard M. Nixon, these silver dollars account for most of the mint state CC Morgans known today. Veteran numismatists may remember the great rush on silver dollars that occurred during the early 1960s. For generations these coins had laid undisturbed in Treasury and Federal Reserve vaults, serving primarily as a backing for Silver Certificate notes. In 1935, when Congress changed the written obligation appearing on Silver Certificates so that the notes could be redeemed “in silver” instead of in “silver dollars”, production of silver dollar coins ceased. Only in the far western states were silver dollars used in daily commerce, and even collectors showed little interest in Morgan and Peace Dollars. Starting about 1958, however, the number of silver dollars being withdrawn from government vaults increased annually, reaching a fever pitch in 1963-64 following the discovery of previously scarce dates. In March of 1964 the Treasury, after having discovered many bags of scarce CC silver dollars, stopped redeeming Silver Certificates with silver dollars, offering bars or granules in their place. After June 24, 1968 the redemption of silver certificates in silver ceased altogether, although the notes remain legal tender to this day. 0.7734 troy oz. The Morgan dollar was a United States dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar, ceased due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which also ended the free coining of silver. The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. The obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty, while the reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched. The mint mark, if any, appears on the reverse above the “o” in “Dollar”. The dollar was authorized by the BlandAllison Act. Following the passage of the 1873 act, mining interests lobbied to restore free silver, which would require the Mint to accept all silver presented to it and return it, struck into coin. This act, once again, was repealed in 1893. When those silver reserves were depleted in 1904, the Mint ceased to strike the Morgan dollar. The Pittman Act, passed in 1918, authorized the melting and recoining of millions of silver dollars. Pursuant to the act, Morgan dollars resumed mintage for one year in 1921. The design was replaced by the Peace dollar later the same year. In the early 1960s, a large quantity of uncirculated Morgan dollars in their original bags were discovered in the Treasury vaults, including issues once thought rare. Individuals began purchasing large quantities of the pieces at face value and then removed them from circulation through hoarding, and eventually the Treasury ceased exchanging silver certificates for silver coin. Beginning in the 1970s, the Treasury conducted a sale of silver dollars minted at the Carson City Mint through the General Services Administration. In 2006, Morgan’s reverse design was used on a silver dollar issued to commemorate the old San Francisco Mint building. The item “1880/79-S Morgan Silver Dollar 8 Over 7 MS65 PCGS. CAC.
