On the obverse is a left-side portrait of President Eisenhower. He bears a stern countenance that is fitting for one of the greatest Generals in American history. He is joined by the inscriptions “LIBERTY, ” “1972, ” and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. Gasparro’s reverse is similar to the Apollo 11 mission patch worn into space by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. It features an eagle landing on the moon carrying an olive branch. Thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, arch over the bird, and the earth is visible in the distance. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” are inscribed along the rim, while “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one) is inscribed just above the bird’s head.
