The crown is significant because it consists of one Southern crop and one Northern one, while the cap designates her as a freed slave. The image is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and 1888. On the reverse, an open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows represent America’s willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. The bird’s wings stretch upwards toward the edge, and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST, ” is inscribed between them. Rim inscriptions offer the coin’s country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ” and face value, ONE DOLLAR. This coin earned an uncirculated Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
