This is a very nice 1971-D or 1972 D Ike Dollar Mint Error that was struck on a 50 cent planchet. Even without the date, one can tell it is a 1971 or 1972 because of the Type 1 Earth on the reverse. This error was also struck with clashed dies. This is evident with the clashed die features of the Talon Head and the UDU (Upside Down U) between the E in WE and Ikes neck. This coin also features a very much die-abraded “Peg Leg”. Probably from repairing the clashed die. There is also a random “floating U” in front of Ike’s nose that looks to be the U from UNITED, but I have never seen that on a clashed die Ike before and I’ve worked with the Ike Group on Clashed Die Ikes and errors for many years. Collectors today are passionate about Carson City Morgan silver dollars in their original GSA packaging. The fact that hundreds of thousands of these dollars have been removed from the government slabs, and the black boxes and accompanying cards have been discarded, adds to allure of pursuing a collection of GSA Morgans. Fortunately, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) began grading GSA dollars in their original government slabs in 2004. NGCs census report of coins graded provides us with a valuable tool in analyzing the rarity of the different dates in the GSA Carson City series, especially as the coins ascend the grading scale. The coin in the photo is the coin you will receive. All major credit cards. Any product you return must be in the same condition you received it and in the sealed original packaging.
