Released as part of the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program, this silver dollar commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first manned landing on the Moon by NASA’s Apollo 11 crew, which has inspired generations of Americans and fueled innovation and economic growth throughout a range of industries. The obverse (heads) design-determined by a public design competition-features a footprint on the lunar surface, as well as the inscriptions “MERCURY, ” “GEMINI, ” and “APOLLO, ” separated by phases of the moon, representing the efforts of the United States space program leading up to the first manned Moon landing. Also included on the obverse is the “P” mint mark. The reverse (tails) design showcases a depiction of the famous’Buzz Aldrin on the Moon’ photograph captured on July 20, 1969. This portrayal captures the visor and a section of astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s helmet. In the reflection of Aldrin’s helmet, astronaut Neil Armstrong, the United States flag, and the lunar ladder, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and ONE DOLLAR. 999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
