Morgan’s iconic Liberty design graces the obverse. Morgan used an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, departing from the long standing tradition of using Greek-style models for the figure. Liberty dons a Phrygian cap and is encircled by two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1800, ” and thirteen stars. Reverse: Morgan’s reverse design features an eagle within an open wreath. The bird holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST, ” is inscribed above its head. Along the rim are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ” and the coin’s face value, ONE DOLLAR. Morgan was the US Mint’s seventh Chief Engraver.
