This series takes its name from George T. Morgan, who designed both faces of it. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting the figure as a Greek style woman, instead choosing to show her as an American style woman. She wears a Phrygian cap that covers much of her long, curly hair. It also identifies her as a freed slave. Also her head are a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name and a crown made of cotton and wheat. The crown represents national unity, as cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is a Northern one. Thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, connect a pair of rim inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and 1889. An open wreath wraps under an eagle on the reverse. The bird holds arrows, symbols of America’s preparedness to defend her values, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in its talons. The national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST, ” is inscribed between its outstretched wings. Encircling this image are a pair of rim inscriptions, which note the coin’s country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ” and its face value, ONE DOLLAR. This coin earned a Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that a coin has about an average strike and shows no traces of wear.
