MCM Picks: Memorial Day. The Panic of 1893 led to much lower mintages of Morgan Silver Dollars than usual. In fact, this coin comes from a mintage of just 378,000 pieces. The coin is a great option for collectors not only because it is part of the most iconic series in American history but also because it helps tell the story of issuing country’s monetary history. This piece was struck from. Featuring the Unifying Liberty Design of George T. Both faces of this coin bear designs that were created by George T. Morgan, from whom the series gets its name. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan departed from the tradition of showing her as an American style figure, instead choosing an American style figure, Anna Willess Williams, as his model. Liberty wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, and a crown of cotton and wheat. The crown is a symbol of unity, as it consists of one Southern crop and one Northern one. This image is encircled by two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1893, ” and thirteen stars, which represent the original states. On the reverse, an open wreath partially encircles a heraldic eagle. The bird spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows remind all that America is prepared to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates that the country would prefer peace. Along the rim are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ” and the coin’s face value, ONE DOLLAR. This coin received a grade of Mint State 64 from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade indicates that a coin has an average or better strike and shows no traces of wear.
