Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear the designs of George T. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty, who dons a ribbon and a Phrygian cap. Morgan chose an American-style model for the figure, Anna Willess Williams, thus departing from the tradition of using Greek-style figures. Along the rim are the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1880, ” as well as 13 stars. Reverse: An eagle spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. It is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST, ” is inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ” and the face value of the coin, ONE DOLLAR. Morgan served as the seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
