A lunar footprint design by Gary Cooper emerged victorious for encapsulating the tremendous achievement with a simple symbol. Cooper also honors the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, “MERCURY, ” “GEMINI, ” and “APOLLO, ” by including their names along the rim at the top. Phebe Hemphill’s reverse design is sure to move any patriotic American. Based on a photograph taken on the moon, it shows a powerful reflection in the visor of Buzz Aldrin’s space helmet. Neil Armstrong is standing on the moon between the American flag and the lunar module. The coin’s shape mimics the curvature of Aldrin’s helmet. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this piece in a black core holder, which offers a sharp contrast with the silver coin. The grading company also certified that the coin is perfect as seen by the naked eye by awarding it their second highest grade, Mint State 69. The coin was also labeled Early Releases, which means that it was submitted to NGC no more than thirty days after the it was released by the mint.
