Serving Collectors and Investors for Over 50 Years. Deal of the Day. This was in response to the ongoing loss of these holdered coins, as collectors have come to recognize the historic value of the coin and holder combination. Over the years, many have been lost forever when the coins they contained were broken out to be submitted for grading. By combining the best of both worlds, NGC hopes to encourage owners of these coins to preserve the GSA holders for posterity. This Carson City Morgan Uncirculated Silver Dollar comes with its complete original GSA Sale packaging – includes plastic holder, outer box and numbered Certificate of Authenticity Photos are of the actual coin you will receive RELEASE OF SILVER DOLLARS BY THE U. TREASURY: “THE GSA SALE” The General Services Administration (GSA) was responsible for sorting and marketing the U. Treasury’s hoard of silver dollars after the Treasury ceased issuing silver dollar coins in 1964. Sealed in rigid plastic holders and boxed with a message from then President Richard M. Nixon, these silver dollars account for most of the mint state CC Morgans known today. Veteran numismatists may remember the great rush on silver dollars that occurred during the early 1960s. For generations these coins had laid undisturbed in Treasury and Federal Reserve vaults, serving primarily as a backing for Silver Certificate notes. In 1935, when Congress changed the written obligation appearing on Silver Certificates so that the notes could be redeemed “in silver” instead of in “silver dollars”, production of silver dollar coins ceased. Only in the far western states were silver dollars used in daily commerce, and even collectors showed little interest in Morgan and Peace Dollars. Starting about 1958, however, the number of silver dollars being withdrawn from government vaults increased annually, reaching a fever pitch in 1963-64 following the discovery of previously scarce dates. In March of 1964 the Treasury, after having discovered many bags of scarce CC silver dollars, stopped redeeming Silver Certificates with silver dollars, offering bars or granules in their place. After June 24, 1968 the redemption of silver certificates in silver ceased altogether, although the notes remain legal tender to this day. UPS 2 Day Air with Signature Confirmation. They were the first standardized silver dollars following the production of the Seated Liberty pattern which ended in 1873 due to the Coinage Act of 1873. The Coinage Act of 1873 outlawed all holders of silver bullion to strike their silver into legal tender. In 1878, the Grand Bland Plan otherwise referred to as the’Bland-Allison Act’, was enacted to restore the silver dollar. The fineness of these silver dollars became standardized at 412.5 grains of. 100 copper, a net weight of. 77344 ounces pure silver, and a total weight of 26.73 grams 0.942873 oz. Morgan Dollars as they became known, were designed and named after by the United States Mint assistant engraver George T. Morgan’s design featured a profiled bust of Liberty on the obverse and an eagle with outstretched wings on the reverse. Furthermore, dates were struck below the bust of liberty and mint marks (when present) are below the wreath on the reverse. Morgan’s last initial (M) can be found at the truncation of the neck. His last initial (M) is also found on the reverse on the left hand loop of the ribbon. Packages are no longer insured if tracking information shows the package is delivered. Offered here is a 1934 Texas Commemorative Half Dollar. It is graded by NGC as MS-65. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. The Texas Independence Centennial Half Dollar had a rather ambitious maximum authorized mintage of 1,500,000 pieces, well above the modest levels of other recent issues. Eventually, the coin would be struck in five different years across three different Mint facilities. Most collectors consider the Texas Half Dollar to have one of the most beautiful or at least ornate designs with the series of early commemorative coins. Designed by Texas sculptor Pompeo Coppini, the obverse features an eagle clasping an oak branch with a large star in the background. The inscriptions around the image include United States of America, Half Dollar, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and the date. The central figure on the reverse of the coin is the kneeling figure of winged Victory. In her right hand is a spray of laurel, while her left hand rests on a representation of the Alamo. Beneath each of Victorys wings are portraits of the Texas heroes Sam Houston and Stephen Austin. More than 200,000 pieces were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, but after sales reached 61,436, the remaining quantity was sent back for melting. Despite declining sales, the same coins would be struck and offered for the next three years. All issues remain relatively available today, with a premium attached to the low mintage 1938-dated coins. Texas Centennial Half Dollar Coin Specifications. The Only American Coin To Show The British Crown – Norfolk Commemorative Half Dollar. The Norfolk, Virginia, Bicentennial half dollar is a half dollar commemorative coin struck by the United States Bureau of the Mint in 1937, though it bears the date 1936. The coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of Norfolk being designated as a royal borough, and the 100th anniversary of it becoming a city. It was designed by spouses William Marks Simpson and Marjory Emory Simpson. Virginia Senator Carter Glass sought legislation for a Norfolk half dollar, but the bill was amended in committee to provide for commemorative medals instead. Unaware of the change, Glass and the bill’s sponsor in the House of Representatives, Absalom W. Robertson, shepherded the legislation through Congress. Local authorities in Norfolk did not want medals, and sought an amendment, which passed Congress in June 1937. The legislation required that all coins be dated 1936; thus, there are five dates on the half dollar, none of which are the date of coining, 1937. The Norfolk half dollar is the only U. Coin to depict the British crown, shown on the city’s ceremonial mace, found on the reverse (“tails” side) of the coin.
