Produced for twenty-eight years and struck at five different Mints, the complete series includes ninety-seven unique date, Mint mark and design combinations. This Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1883, the sixth year of issue for the series, from 0.7734 Troy oz. 900 fine silver, with a final mintage reported to be 8,725,000. Adorned with a “LIBERTY” crown and a Phrygian cap symbolizing liberty and freedom, Lady Liberty appears on the obverse, with thirteen stars curving below. Inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and 1883. An eagle with three arrows and an olive branch in its grip is featured on the reverse, above a laurel wreath. Inscriptions include “O” (representing the New Orleans Mint), “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and ONE DOLLAR. ” The designs each feature Morgan’s initial “M, found at the truncation of Liberty’s neck on the obverse, and in the loop of the wreath’s ribbon on the reverse.
