All King Kalakaua coins would not be legal tender after 1/1/1904. 700,000 half dollars were minted. 612,245 were melted down and lost forever. This leaves only 87,781coins in the official count. However, there’s a problem with the official count. It doesn’t take into account of 2 large Honolulu fires. There was a fire in 1887 and a huge fire known as the Great Bubonic Plague Fire of Honolulu in 1900. How do fires and surviving coin numbers correlate? There was a very large Chinese population in Honolulu. No one really knows the number of coins lost to these two intense fires. The 700,000 coins were minted in San Francisco using. Seated Liberty Half Dollar planchets. Still not special enough? Here’s where it gets really good! Whaling ships ships crowded Honolulu harbor. They brought oil, ivory and lots of RATS. Rats eat burlap bags. 1883 silver coins were stored in burlap bank bags. Sulfur was generously used on these burlap bank bags to deter the rats. Sulfur turns silver coins black and dull. Finding an untoned “white” silver coin can be challenging. Most coins are dark. Some have semi colorful toning. Finding a Proof-Like coin is virtually impossible!! There’s only TWO NGC graded PL half dollars! Here’s an example. The King of Morgans, the 1895 Proof has a mintage of 880. At the time of writing this, there are 7 auctions for an 1895. After that, come back an consider this ultra rare coin! This is a coin that will standout in any collection! I occasionally sell coins from my collection. I thoroughly inspect all of my coins prior to purchasing them originally myself. This means that your getting the best example of the grade that you’ll find. I have a high standard for all coins entering my collection. Check out my other auctions HERE. Thanks for stopping by! SO OF COURSE WE COMBINE! We believe first class collectibles combined with exceptional customer service should mark the height of your consumer happiness! That said, we are human and make mistakes. We simply ask this: if you have a problem, please allow us the courtesy of addressing any and all problems FIRST before leaving a comment or ratings or beginning a return etc. We’d be very grateful to you. After all, what’s the point of giving good customer service when things are easy, right? The Battle of Gettysburg Commemorative Silver Half Dollar. The Battle of Gettysburg, which occurred from July 1st-3rd of 1863, was one of the deadliest fights of the Civil War and marks the beginning of the long and painful Confederate withdrawal and ultimate defeat in 1865. In observance of the battles 75th anniversary, the Pennsylvania State Commission sought to have a commemorative coin issued to honor the memory of those who fought and died. They were successful, and legislation was passed on June 16, 1936 which called for the minting of no more than 50,000 half dollars commemorating the battle. The Commission hired Philadelphia sculptor Frank Vittor to design the coin. In a departure from most of the commemorative coin programs of the era, Vittors original models were well-received by the Commission of Fine Arts from the onset. One of the only major issues that the Commission had with the coin was the similarity between the Union and Confederate soldiers on the obverse. This might have actually been an intentional nod towards the Civil War theme of brother against brother and was not changed. Final approval of the design was given on March 24th, 1937. The dies were then prepared in Philadelphia, and the maximum mintage of 50,000 was produced at the Mint there in June. Vittors obverse design portrays conjoined busts of Union and Confederate veterans in uniform facing right. Above are the mottoes LIBERTY and EPLURIBUSUNUM. Arranged in arcs around the periphery are the legends UNITED STATESOFAMERICA and BLUEAND GRAY REUNION, separated by stars. The reverse is dominated by Union and Confederate shields, separated from one another by fasces. Wrapped around these elements are branches of oak and olive, perhaps symbolizing war and peace. The date 1936 appears below; this was specified in the enabling act, though it has no other relevance to this coin. Below the date is the value HALFDOLLAR, while above the shields is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, separated by the blades of the fasces. Around the periphery are the inscriptions 75THANNIVERSARY and BATTLEOFGETTYSBURG and the dates 1863 and 1938, all separated by stars. After the event, the remaining coins were transferred to the American Legion in Pennsylvania. Serving Collectors and Investors for Over 50 Years. Deal of the Day. This was in response to the ongoing loss of these holdered coins, as collectors have come to recognize the historic value of the coin and holder combination. Over the years, many have been lost forever when the coins they contained were broken out to be submitted for grading. By combining the best of both worlds, NGC hopes to encourage owners of these coins to preserve the GSA holders for posterity. This Carson City Morgan Uncirculated Silver Dollar comes with its complete original GSA Sale packaging – includes plastic holder, outer box and numbered Certificate of Authenticity Photos are of the actual coin you will receive RELEASE OF SILVER DOLLARS BY THE U. TREASURY: “THE GSA SALE” The General Services Administration (GSA) was responsible for sorting and marketing the U. Treasury’s hoard of silver dollars after the Treasury ceased issuing silver dollar coins in 1964. Sealed in rigid plastic holders and boxed with a message from then President Richard M. Nixon, these silver dollars account for most of the mint state CC Morgans known today. Veteran numismatists may remember the great rush on silver dollars that occurred during the early 1960s. For generations these coins had laid undisturbed in Treasury and Federal Reserve vaults, serving primarily as a backing for Silver Certificate notes. In 1935, when Congress changed the written obligation appearing on Silver Certificates so that the notes could be redeemed “in silver” instead of in “silver dollars”, production of silver dollar coins ceased. Only in the far western states were silver dollars used in daily commerce, and even collectors showed little interest in Morgan and Peace Dollars. Starting about 1958, however, the number of silver dollars being withdrawn from government vaults increased annually, reaching a fever pitch in 1963-64 following the discovery of previously scarce dates. In March of 1964 the Treasury, after having discovered many bags of scarce CC silver dollars, stopped redeeming Silver Certificates with silver dollars, offering bars or granules in their place. After June 24, 1968 the redemption of silver certificates in silver ceased altogether, although the notes remain legal tender to this day. 0.7734 troy oz.
