The 1923 Monroe Doctrine Centennial Half Dollar was promoted by the California film industry in connection with the First Annual Historical Revue and Motion Picture Film Industry Exposition. The topic of the coin was the 100th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, which stated that efforts of European countries to interfere or establish new colonies in the west would be viewed as acts of aggression. The Doctrine had a long standing impact on U. The obverse design of the Monroe Doctrine Half Dollar features portraits of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams, who were both instrumental in formulating the Doctrine. United States of America? In God We Trust? The date of issue? Depicted on the reverse are two female forms in shapes resembling North and South America. This image is said to have copied from a medal created by Ralph Beck in 1899 of the same theme. The artist and medalist Chester Beach is generally credited with the designs for the obverse and reverse of the coin. With the dual date? The later inscription was the only reference to the exposition for which the coins were to be issued. A vast number of the mintage was eventually released into circulation at face value. Nearly all examples of this issue will be encountered with shallow strikes and characteristically unattractive surfaces. Higher grade mint state examples with an attractive appearance are extremely elusive. Monroe Doctrine Centennial Half Dollar Coin Specifications. Offered here is a 1936-D San Diego Commemorative Half Dollar. It is graded by NGC as MS-64 and is CAC certified. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. The issue commonly referred to as the San Diego Half Dollar was authorized to mark the California-Pacific International Exposition. The commemorative coins were first issued in 1935 struck at the San Francisco Mint, and later in 1936 struck at the Denver Mint. The obverse design was based on elements of the California State Seal. Inscriptions read “United States of America”, “Liberty”, and “Half Dollar”. The reverse image includes two of the exposition buildings, the observation tower and the Sate of California building. The words “California Pacific International Exposition” appear in a circle around the image, with “In God We Trust”, “San Francisco”, and the date in the center. The designer of the coin was Robert Aitken. After slow initial sales, the exposition sought and received Congressional approval to send back 180,000 of the unsold coins to be melted and reminted with the 1936 date. Despite these efforts, sales progressed even more slowly. Eventually, 150,000 of the 1936 coins were sent back to the Mint for melting. After the entire convoluted process, total sales were 100,224 out of the 250,000 maximum authorized mintage. For present day collectors this issue remains widely available and relatively affordable even in grades up to MS66. San Diego Half Dollar Coin Specifications. Designer: Robert Aitken Composition: 90% silver, 10% copper Weight: 12.50 grams Diameter: 30.6 mm Authorization: Public Law 74-50 and 74-566 Maximum Authorized Mintage: 250,000. The coin in the above pictures is the one you will receive. 1936 Bay Bridge Half Dollar. The opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was commemorated with the issuance of a silver half dollar. Commonly referred to as the Bay Bridge Half Dollar , the issue proved to be one of the most popular from the plethora of commemorative coins released during the same year. The coins were designed by San Francisco artist Jacques Schnier. The obverse features a grizzly bear, as a symbol of California, in three-quarter view. The inscriptions read “United States of America”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, and “Half Dollar”. The reverse design depicts the Bay Bridge, with Ferry Tower in the foreground, Yerba Buena Island and East Bay Hills in the distance. The design is intriguing in the virtual lack of any completely smooth fields. Both the water and sky are presented in a modernistic pattern. Inscriptions read “San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge” and “1936”. The maximum authorized mintage for the issue was 200,000 pieces. The Coin Committee of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Celebration ordered 100,000 coins and indicated that it was their intention to only issue this amount. Coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint. This resulted in a net distribution of 71,424 pieces for the 1936 Bay Bridge Half Dollar. Because of the unique design, the obverse is more prone to displaying contact marks and abrasions. The complex and intricate design of the reverse tends to protect or obscure any such marks. The issue remains readily available for present day collectors, affordable through gem grades. Bay Bridge Half Dollar Coin Specifications.
