The coin bears the “P” mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint where it was struck from 26.73 g of. Along with the proof version, this coin has a maximum mintage of 400,000 pieces. The Apollo 11 issues are just the second ever domed coins produced by the US Mint. Iconic Armstrong Reflection Design by Phebe Hemphill. The mint held a contest for the obverse design, and Gary Cooper’s artwork emerged victorious. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, it features a single footprint on the surface of the moon. Arching over the footprint are the names of the NASA programs that made the mission possible, “MERCURY, ” “GEMINI, ” and “APOLLO, ” along with images of the moon in various phases.
